Comprehensive Beginner’s Guide to Hypnosis Mic

Since, for an English speaker, HypMic can seem inscrutable, I figured I’d put together some links and resources in one place to make it a little easier to get the full picture. If any other fans think there’s anything I should add, please let me know! I’ll note up ahead that this guide focuses on stuff that’s free and online, and doesn’t (yet) have instructions on how to buy either CDs or manga. I’ve also left out information on the battle seasons, since last year’s is all wrapped up and the next one might be different (and since they’re mostly about CD buying).

The scope of this guide may make it look like there’s a lot. Don’t worry, once you get into it a little bit, it isn’t that much! It really, really isn’t…

Start with this Beginner’s Guide to Hypnosis Mic from Otaku Mode [Otaku Mode link]. It covers what HypMic even is, the characters, and touches on each area of the franchise. All of which this guide will expand on!

Official links (in Japanese)

Unofficial Translation groups

Each group has different areas of focus, so we’ll get to ‘em when we get to ‘em!

The Characters

This is the main draw of the franchise for most people! The characters are a lot of fun and lend themselves to, well, the sorts of things fans like to do.

The Music

HypMic’s songs are mostly little insights into the characters. They don’t have much “lore”, per se, but are fun nonetheless.

The Drama Tracks

This is where the bulk of the narrative exists right now. The canon, basically. This is the main place you’re gonna get any lore or proper characterization!

The Manga

Three HypMic manga are currently running: “Before the Battle: The Dirty Dawg”, “Division Rap Battle: side B.B & M.T.C”, and “Division Rap Battle: side F.P & M”. At time of writing, the former is covering backstories; the latter two are retreading ground already covered by the early drama tracks, with some additions and expansions.

The Live Shows

The voice actors of HypMic are infrequently involved in live shows that feature rapping, singing, events, and announcements. Some of these shows are streamed, and some of these streams are still uploaded in various places. They’re fun! But since not all of them survive online anymore, and because they concern the voice actors more than the characters they play, nobody (in English-speaking fandom, at least) really considers them canon.

The Mobile Game

…isn’t out yet. And nobody knows what it’s going to be about. It releases this year, but so far we just have, like, a vague announcement ad. Whelp! It’s got a page on QooApp [QooApp link], and that’s all I can really give you. Let’s all hope it’s good when it releases.

Other Fun and Useful Pages

One last note, that’s probably obvious to most people, but I’ll say anyways. On tumblr, HypMic posts are tagged variously with “hypnosis mic” [tumblr link]“hypmic” [tumblr link]“hipumai” [tumblr link]“ヒプノシスマイク” [tumblr link], “ ヒプマイ” [tumblr link], and the different characters’ names in both romaji and kanji. Hopefully that helps out your searching for fun fan content!
